Leaving Point Samson

For the last three months we've been working at the Tavern as kitchen hands in Point Samson. It has been such a great experience, one I'm not likely to forget. I've made some great friends that I'm hoping to stay in touch with for the rest of my life.

Working there was never boring thanks to the easy comradery and banter that went on amongst the staff. There were a few times that I was brought to my knees from laughing at their antics.

Living a minute from the beach for three months you'd think that I would have been down there everyday but the truth is I think I only went down there about ten times and only once was it to swim.

Staying in one place was really hard for the first month, I was itching to get back on the road, to see more places. I was also incredibly homesick, I had been avoiding the feeling by moving from one place to another always keeping myself busy but with being forced to stay in the one place the feelings caught up.

I think I must have called back home everyday for two weeks straight before I started to feel better. It helped knowing that I'd see them in a few weeks for Christmas. With the feeling of homesickness came the need to seek out friendships. I've never been great with making friends, I've never had the need to, with my siblings being the only friends I need but desperate times call for desperate measures.

Once when I was out on the hammock our house neighbour Crested Pigeon joined me and through a long talk on how people see different things in the moon a friendship was born, one that's only become stronger as the days passed. We both share a love of joking around and a love for children, an insecurity around new people and new situations. We're both quiet and yet can be the loudest in the room if we feel like it. I taught her how to bake and as a surprise she made me Rocky Road as a farewell gift. Crested Pigeon you truly are one of the best friends I'll ever have and I wish our time together could have been longer.

Making friends with the Chefs was easy because they had a similar sense of humor to me. Unfortunately one of the chefs, Pelican, left while we were away for Christmas but it was an honor to meet him and joke around with him, and who knows maybe before our trip is over we'll see him again.

The other Chef brought back a kitten from his time at home over Christmas and as a non cat person I can honestly say it's the cutest little thing, I do believe that she has converted me into a cat lover... No, a kitten lover, let’s not get too carried away.

Having a movie night with everyone and having the Chef bringing her over, was one of the best ideas Crested Pigeon and I have ever had, she had the room wrapped around her soft little paw, sometimes making us burst out laughing in the weirdest parts in the movie.

The days leading up to our leaving had the same normal routine to them so it didn't really register that we'd be moving on. The final day did come however in the form of a cloudy gray sky, the most rain promising sky that we'd ever seen in WA. It didn't end up raining however, they stayed for awhile then dispersed.

After a lot of predictions from the Chef that it'd be a busy day we were sadly disappointed with a quieter than normal Sunday. The last half hour was filled with me saying things like "This is the last time I'll run up these stairs" or "My last pizza I'll ever cut" finally though our shift ended. Just before finishing we were surprised with flowers and chocolates from the kitchen staff, which meant a lot to me. We gave out hugs, said our goodbyes, filled our drink bottles with ice than hit the road.

With a last glance in the side mirror of the Point Samson sign we continued on our journey.
